
Nave Newell has always been involved with transportation as it pertains to the land development approval process including roadway design and permitting. More recently, with the emergence of new technologies like laser scanning , Nave Newell has been successful in providing high-definition survey services for transportation infrastructure projects throughout the region.
I-95 Section BRI, Philadelphia, PAI-95 Section BRI is the next step in PennDOT’s initiative to reconstruct and improve Interstate 95 and its bridges and structures north of Center City Philadelphia. The project includes the reconstruction and widening of approximately one mile of I-95 and its shoulders and more than a dozen new bridges and ramps from the Bridge Street Interchange to the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchanges. Nave Newell is currently in the field utilizing 3D laser scanning technology to survey the existing structures as part of the project’s preliminary engineering phase. The field data collected by Nave Newell will include dimensions, elevations, grades and locations of existing features to be utilized in the design of roadway, structure and ramps improvements. A combination of laser scanning technology and conventional survey methods best suited the DOT’s needs for this project. The key advantages to laser scanning were the significant reduction in the Maintenance and Protection of Traffic requirements, the increased safety of field crews and the reduction in delays to commuters as the scanning was done from the shoulder areas or at locations on private property. Laser scanning the interstate will provide the bridge engineering consultant, with an extremely high level of field detail to perform the structural design. The use of the laser scanner on I-95 will reduce project costs, improve roadway worker safety and mitigate the impact on the traveling public with the elimination of lane closures during field surveys. Amtrak Signal Bridge , Harrison, Hudson County, NJAmtrak planned to replace the signal bridge at milepost 7.90 in Harrison, NJ and needed as-built information for the existing structure. Nave Newell laser scanned the signal bridge to provide topographic information for 250 feet on both sides of the bridge, structural details for the signal bridge and the four closest catenary structures. Laser scanning technology best suited this project as it eliminated the need for track outages or foul time, and associated flagging and schedule delays that would be required for conventional survey. Nave Newell processed the scan data and provided elevations for the signal bridge and catenary structures. A site plan was also developed for structural and track elements. The plans developed from the HDS process assisted the client in the procurement and planning for the new signal bridge construction. The available scan data also assisted other Amtrak departments to integrate to their facilities to bring the new signal bridge on-line. Laser scanning the rail structure provided the owner and client with a non invasive surveying method that resulted in a phenomenal level of detail and a higher degree of confidence in the data than ever before. SEPTA's Levittown Station, Levittown Township, Bucks County, PANave Newell laser scanned SEPTA’s R7 Regional Rail Levittown Station and surrounding roadways to provide Gannett Fleming with topographic plans and an existing conditions plan for design of a new station building, expansion of the parking facilities, construction of new roadway access to Rte 13, construction of new high-level platforms and an underground pedestrian tunnel. Nave Newell scanned over 2000 feet of track structure as well as the existing roadway network in and around the station to consolidate the lot and allow for safer vehicle circulation and more efficient bus and intermodal transfers. The 3D field data allowed Gannett Fleming to quickly and easily reference wire clearances, top of rail elevations for platform and canopy design and sign & billboard information reducing the cost of return field visits. Conventional survey and property research were also performed in support of the high-definition survey services.
