A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that goes back almost 5,000 years and relates to wholeness and finding your center. After all these years, they are still popular with churches and religious groups because they enable us to pause and find focus in the midst of our busy lives. For the First Presbyterian Church of Pottstown, Nave Newell’s landscape architects designed a prayer labyrinth to tie in with the Church entrance and complement an existing gathering area.
Our landscape architects put together the inspiration board to help the client understand layout and design options and visualize their labyrinth garden. Biblical plants including boxwood, sage, arborvitae, and hyssop were part of the initial design; however, based upon cost, hardiness, and maintenance considerations, the final design included traditional accent hollies and grasses that are doing wonderfully. Seating areas along the outskirts of the labyrinth offer another place to reflect and meditate.
